Description

Australovenator wintonensis, a poorly known genus of Megaraptoran dinosaur from the rocks near Winton, Queensland,Australia, closely related to south american Megaraptor

Megaraptorans are a curious bunch, at first they were tought to be dromeosaurs thanks to the enlarged claw, but later they were found out to be Allosauroids, more specifically neovenatorids, and that menacing claw was actually on their hands rather than their feet. Now, lately, the finding of the skull of a juvenile Megaraptor showed us just how wrong we were about these animals, they weren't allosauroids, much less dromeosaurs, the truth is actually far more awesome, Megaraptorans were infact... Tyrannosauroids! Possibly a sister clade to proceratosauridae (Guanlong,Sinotyrannus,Kileksus,Proceratosaurus and allies), plus our understanding of their skulls was very very wrong.

here is the new paper:

So say hello to the newest members of the tyrannosaur family!

Australovenator was decipted on the 1999 documentary Walking With Dinosaurs, where at the time it was undescribed and wrongly described as an allosaur (even being called "Polar allosaur" in the documentary.

for this reconstruction, i used the very few known remains we have of A.wintonensis and filled in the blanks mostly with its closest relative, Megaraptor, from which we have now found a (abeit juvenile skull), but also with basal tyrannosauroids, specially Sinotyrannus and Xiongguanlong.

Color concept are based on two very australian things, the body paint pattern used by the native aboriginal tribes  4.bp.blogspot.com/-gOSCRHwgQFg…

and of course the most awesome bird of all, the southern cassowary  (Casuarius casuarius)

I've given it quill like feathers similar to those found on the wings of cassowaries or in the "raptors" from primeval for the "mohawk" and simpler protofeathers, similar to those found on Dilong and Yutyrannus for the rest of the coat.
